Thanks for sparing me the pain and resentment of a slowly fading love

I was searching for an example of using the words "thanks for sparing me ..." and found an electronic greeting card saying something semi-witty, but it started quite poetically with this sentiment:
Thanks for sparing me the pain and resentment of a slowly fading love

    klingt etwas merkwürdig... man weiß doch vorher gar nicht, ob die Liebe
    langsam "ausfadet"? Und wenn sie es tut, hat man es sich auch nicht erspart.
    Soll man sich also trennnen, wenns am schönsten ist?
